Eastbourne G&S: The Mikado

22nd May, 2026 - 24th May, 2026
£10 – £22

Gilbert & Sullivan’s most enduring masterpiece, The Mikado, returns to Eastbourne in a vibrant production that will delight lifelong fans and newcomers alike.

Experience the familiar story, songs, and characters exactly as you remember them, now set against the beautiful backdrop of a rugged Scottish landscape. While Gilbert famously used a fictionalised Japan to poke fun at British society, this production—affectionately known as The McAdo—celebrates that same satirical spirit in a charming Celtic setting.

In a town where flirting is a capital offence, the local executioner is in over his head. The chaos begins when a wandering minstrel with a dangerous secret arrives in search of his true love, only to find himself entangled in a web of absurd laws and paradoxical logic. When the fearsome ruler demands a head must roll, the town is plunged into a hilarious world of bureaucratic blunders, jealous rivals, and classic comedic twists.

From the “Little List” to “Three Little Maids”, all the iconic moments remain at the heart of this spectacular performance. This acclaimed adaptation preserves every bit of the legendary wit and melody that has made The Mikado a favourite for generations.

Praise for The McAdo:

“…this resetting really does work in that it sharpens and clarifies Gilbert’s original satirical intent.” — Berkshire on Stage

“A brilliant reimagining… a world-class opera take-off on The Mikado.” — David Glen Robinson, Arts Critic

“Gilbert and Sullivan would be proud. Savoyards everywhere should come see it.” — CTX Live Theatre

There is a reason The Mikado has delighted audiences for decades. Don’t miss your chance to see this regional premiere of a reimagined classic that stays true to the heart of the original!

With thanks to Gilbert & Sullivan Austin, for their kind permission to stage their adaptation, ‘The McAdo’, in Eastbourne.
